Acupuncture **

  Back

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into a number of specific locations mapped across the surface of an animal’s body. This technique has been used for thousands of years in people to alleviate pain, increase recovery rate and improve the body’s natural resistance to disease.

Acupuncture is practiced through either a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach or The Western Scientific approach.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, emotional, environmental and hereditary factors all contribute to the process of ‘disease’. The aim of treatment is to restore equilibrium between physical, emotional and spiritual factors, thus restoring and maintaining health. Acupuncture is used alongside other complementary therapies (for example, herbal remedies) to readdress the balance of Yin and Yang through the body and re-evaluate the flow of Qi (pronounced ‘Chi’), blood and phlegm.

The Western approach explains acupuncture mainly as an analgesic (pain relieving) modality for musculoskeletal disorders and chronic, painful disease processes. By placing a needle in a specific acupuncture point that correlates to the nerves and muscles of the same spinal ‘segment’ as the painful area, the pain can be ‘switched off’. Acupuncture will also stimulate the release of certain chemicals from the brain (endorphins, seratonin, noradrenalin, etc.), which produce a general feeling of ‘wellbeing’. The combined effect provides excellent pain relief for the patient.
