Vomiting and diarrhoea

  • Starve your dog for 24 hours. This is very important because the bacteria that cause vomiting and diarrhoea have a very high metabolic rate, so by starving the dog we also starve the bacteria, which will then die. It is very important to make sure that the dog gets plenty of fresh water to drink so it does not dehydrate.

  • Puppies should only be starved for 12 hours.

  • We might prescribe Protexin, which is a culture of good gut bacteria. In simple terms we get the good guys fighting the bad.

  • Dehydration can be life threatening. If your dog has lost large amounts of fluid it will normally become very lethargic and we would need to re-examine the dog.

  • After 24 hours you can start feeding small quantities of bland food. Total quantity should be around half of what the dog normally eats in a day. Bland food is white boiled rice as a carbohydrate source and white fish, chicken and scrambled eggs as a protein source.
  • After 48 hours feed a mixture of half normal food and half white boiled rice. The total amount should still be half of the dog's normal ration.
  • If there is blood in the vomit or diarrhoea get in touch with us.
